He received a B.E. degree in electronic engineering from the University of Yamanashi, Japan, in March 1980 and a Doctorate of Engineering in information systems engineering from Osaka University, Japan, in February 1994.

After joining the NTT Electric Communication Laboratories in 1980, Satoh researched on wafer scale integration technology, a relational database machine for accelerating searches, sorts, and joins, and multimedia database architectures for the dynamic handling of videos.

The areas of his core research expertise are database processing, data engineering, and computer architecture. His current interests include data and contents engineering, information retrieval, and social interactions among humans and between humans and computers.

He is a member of The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers
and The Information Processing Society of Japan.

Professional Experience:

• April 2003 - Present: Executive Manager, Senior Research Scientist, Social Communication Laboratory, NTT Communication Science Laboratories.
  The Social Communication Laboratory aims to reconstruct the social information infrastructure to facilitate richer communication among humans and between humans and society. Currently, a variety of research themes are being explored and managed in the laboratory, including expeliments on understanding natural language and multimodal interactions.
  
• April 2002 - Present: Professor, Cyber Communication Laboratory (NTT)
  Department of Information Networking, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, Osaka University.
  Satoh is leading research into the on stream data processing. Several fundamental technologies have been achieved, including a pattern extraction technique for long-term sequences, a pattern-based motion analysis, and protection techniques for maintaining location privacy.
  
• July 1999 - June 2002: Senior Research Engineer, Information Navigation Group Leader, NTT Cyberspace Laboratories.
  Satoh researched and developed huge Internet information search engines and location-based, context-aware information services. Some of the standout researches in this period is turn to practical use in actual business fields.
  
• July 1996 - January 1999: Manager, Technology Department, NTT Headquarters.
  Promoted electronic monetary systems and single-signed user certification platforms for 10 thousand to 1 million users.
  
• April 1980 - June 1996: Research Engineer for NTT Electric Communication Laboratories. A distinguished technical member of the NTT Information and Communication Laboratories.
  Researched and developed a commercialized relational database machine called ‘Rinda’. This machine featured unique hardware and architecture and accelerated up to a hundred times faster for searching, sorting, and joining.
