On entering the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, teleworking, online meetings, and remote lessons became commonplace along with upgrading of the ICT environment. In addition, the rapid development of ICT technology and dramatic social changes including interactive AI, which is now being covered constantly in the news, are creating a major shift in people’s values and in the way that social activities are carried out. At the same time, they are bringing about a state of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity (VUCA) that is making it increasingly difficult to read the future.
Since the founding of NTT Communication Science Laboratories (CS Labs), we have been engaged in research centered about the pursuit of science that can deepen our understanding of human beings and the creation of technologies that approach and exceed human abilities with the aim of achieving “heart-touching communication” between people and between people and machines. Today, amid great changes in the way that communication takes place between people and between people and machines, we are engaged in basic research ahead of its time based on the principle of deepening mutual understanding, sharing emotions and intentions, and “touching the heart.”
As a means of infectious disease control during the COVID-19 pandemic, open house at CS Labs has been held online since 2020. This year, however, Open House 2023 will be held onsite after three years at QUINTBRIDGE, an open innovation facility operated by NTT West in Kyobashi, Osaka. We will introduce our latest research results in media processing, data and machine learning, human science, brain science, and fundamental mathematics in an easy-to-understand manner through research talks, exhibitions, and hands-on demonstrations.
While keeping in mind that lifestyles are changing with the times, and to design a world in which anyone can flourish, we hope that this will be a forum in which we can make direct contact with all our guests through lively discussions and exchanges. All of us at CS Labs look forward to welcoming many visitors to Open House 2023.
