Greetings

As a countermeasure against the spread of the new coronavirus, we decided not to hold the Open House 2020 as an event at a physical venue but instead to present our latest results on a website.

It has been 35 years since NTT, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, was privatized in 1985, and almost 30 years since the NTT Communication Science Laboratories were established in the Keihanna Science City in 1991.

Since our establishment, we have been engaged in cutting-edge basic research premised on the philosophy that the essence of communication is not only “accurate and efficient communication of information” but also “to deepen mutual understanding, to share feelings, and to create emotional, heart-to-heart relationships,” which we now call “heart-touching” communication.

In today’s situation where we have to significantly reduce our physical contact with other people, it is all the more important to understand the nature of emotional interaction in communication as everyday communication becomes less frequent and less direct.

In keeping with this philosophy, we will continue to creatively refine technology toward the development of “heart-touching” communication and thus help to design a spiritually rich society with a view to the post-pandemic “new normal.”

Open House 2020 introduces our latest research results in an easy-to-understand way through lectures and exhibitions on the web, from machine learning and audio-acoustic processing to perceptual illusions and sports brain science. We hope you can experience, up close, the future we envision.
