Role of haptics in improving wellbeing

- Science and design of touch can enhance human flourishing -
Junji Watanabe, Human Information Science Laboratory

Abstract

Recently it has been pointed out that while information technology makes human intellectual tasks more efficient, it also has negative effects on the psychological state of users. Thus researches for designing mind-enriching information technology are being sought from a different standpoint than that of mere efficiency. In this lecture I will talk about (1) the science for measuring and specifying factors of human wellbeing, (2) development of haptic science and design, and (3) contribution of haptic experiences to modification of cognitive and empathetic attitudes towards self and others. As the information era advances, haptic communication technologies become more crucial for enhancing human flourishing.
